Retired Supreme Court judge AK Ganguly has resigned as the chief of West Bengal Human Rights Commission on Monday, said sources. According to sources, Justice Ganguly met Governor MK Narayanan in the day at Raj Bhawan in Kolkata and submitted his resignation.

Justice Ganguly was accused of sexually harassing a law intern in December 2012 and was indicted by the Supreme Court panel.

After meeting the Governor, Justice Ganguly refused to comment.

On Ganguly's resignation, Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee said, "It's a good thing that he has resign. To little to late, better late than never."

Additional Solicitor General Indira Kaising who has also sought his resignation, said, "He has done the right thing. His resignation should have come earlier. I'm happy that the dignity of the Human Rights Commission office is maintained."

On Sunday, sources said that Justice Ganguly had decided to resign. "Justice Ganguly has decided to resign and he has told his friends that he is going to quit as the chief of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission," sources had told CNN-IBN.

Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee had said, "Justice Ganguly spoke to me over telephone and said that he is thinking of resigning (as WBHRC chief)."

During the telephonic conversation, Justice Ganguly had said so many things are being said about him and wanted his view. Sorabjee said he had told Justice Ganguly that it will be a "wise decision" to resign.

The government had already cleared the Presidential reference after Justice Ganguly refused to quit the post. But if Justice Ganguly resigns before that, then the Presidential reference will become infructuous.

Demands for his resignation from the WBHRC have been expressed in several quarters after a three-judge Supreme Court panel indicted the judge over allegations of sexual harassment of a female law intern in December 2012.

On January 4, Justice Ganguly had stepped down as the guest faculty of National University of Juridical Studies, the alma mater of the victim who accused him of sexual assault.

Ganguly's decision to quit the job with NUJS came after the university announced its stand to dissociate from the accused judge.
